What you need to know about Samsung’s new virtual reality headset
A pair of Samsung’s virtual reality headsets, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9, launched today and feature a new kind of connectivity: a 3G wireless internet connection.
The company says it’s the first company to offer the kind of high-speed connectivity found in the company’s smartphones, but in practice, it’s likely that this is just a test for the future.
Samsung’s headset, known as Galaxy VR, works with the companys Galaxy smartphones and is compatible with the Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Tab 10.2, and Galaxy Note 11.
Samsung says the connection works with both the Galaxy smartphones themselves, as well as their Samsung Gear VR VR and Gear VR S. This means that the headset works with any phone with the right apps installed, including the Galaxy devices, as long as those phones have the correct versions of the apps.
It works even if you don’t have an internet connection at all.
